Google is opening up its smart home platform to outside artificial intelligence. The company announced a new integration called Google Home MCP that allows third-party AI agents to control devices like lights, thermostats, locks, and cameras through the Google Home ecosystem. Early access is starting now.
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard that lets AI tools talk to other software and hardware in a secure way. By adding this layer to Google Home, Google is giving outside AI assistants permission to manage devices in your house. Popular tools like Claude can now review security camera summaries, adjust the temperature, or check who is at the door using natural language commands.
Previously, Google kept tight control over its smart home system. Only Google Assistant could reliably manage these devices, which meant users were largely locked into one ecosystem. The new approach marks a major shift toward interoperability. Someone using Claude on their phone could ask it to dim the living room lights or start the coffee maker without ever opening the Google Home app.
Security is handled through built-in permissions within the protocol, so users remain in control of what each outside agent can see and do. Google says this will accelerate the development of agentic AI, where software acts on behalf of humans to manage real-world tasks automatically.
This move puts pressure on Amazon and Apple to open their own smart home platforms to competing AI agents. It also raises important questions about privacy when multiple companies have access to data about our daily routines at home. As AI agents become more powerful, the battle among tech giants is shifting from simple voice assistants to full home managers.
